About the artist

Jean Miller began her life in a boys' Prep school; from 1938 she went on to act and dance on her uncle's stage at The Theatre Royal, Windsor. After training at ballet school, she performed with Hermione Gingold before progressing to a starring role with Dame Flora Robson. Following her marriage to the late actor, Michael Miller, she reared three children. Thereafter her career took a varied path; she market gardened, made game pies and pates and cooked directors' lunches.

After her husband’s death, in 1996 she moved to Hay on Wye where, at the age of 68 and with no formal training, she began painting and discovered a whole new life, her vibrant works in oil achieving phenomenal popularity and being sought increasingly by visitors to the annual Hay Festival from the UK and beyond.

2008 saw the publication of a book about Jean's life and paintings, and later that year she began selling limited edition prints of some of her paintings to bring them within reach of a wider audience.

Now 81, her enthusiasm and drive for painting remains undiminished, with new works appearing constantly and ensuring that her collection of paintings is never static.
